Would You Wear This Fashion Trend?

by: Darilyn H. Dogayo

Sure, it looks good on someone else, but are you brave enough to take on sky-high stilettos, bows, lace, studs and more of the latest fashion trends? Browse through the fashion trend gallery and cast your vote on which fashion trends you would wear.

Sky-high Stilettos

Flats may be your friend, but super-tall stilettos have become the new trend like these Christian Louboutin's that Nicky Hilton is wearing here. Now would you wear sky-high stilettos?

Bow Blouse

The bow blouse is one of the biggest trends of the new season. Amira Casar wore hers with a graphic skirt. What do you think?

Corset Top

Girls who wear corsets are just a little bit fiercer than those who don't as Charlize Theron proves in this Proenza Schouler corset top. Are you ready for corsets yourself?

Studded Belt

Sarah Jessica Parker kicked off the studded belt trend with her vintage studded black belt for "Sex and the City." Mischa Barton's version of studded belt pops on a solid black strapless dress.

High-Waist Pants

Jennifer Stone donned a wide-legged, high-waisted pair of pants for a recent awards show. Is this a look you could pull off?

Gladiator Sandals

Gladiator sandals are one of the season's hottest trends, but are you ready for this bold footwear?

Statement Necklace

Jennifer Missoni paired an earthy, bold necklace with a neutral top and simple hair: very chic! But are you ready to wear an statement necklace like this?

Surely, we don't wanna be out-fashioned but still we have to make sure that what we wear compliments us. There is nothing wrong in being a fashionista but we have to remember that not all that is "in" looks good on us.

Philippines adapts Project Runway

by: Sonny M. Versoza

Good news fashion addicts! The three-time Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning American creative competition reality series Project Runway now has its own Philippine version! The said version is produced by the Solar Entertainment Corporation and Unitel Productions, and to be aired on cable TV through ETC Entertainment Central and on free TV through SBN 21.

Historical View

Project Runway is a behind-the-scene documentary series and competition reality TV series of the Bravo Network which focuses on fashion design, and started airing on December 2004. The contestants compete with each other to create the most fashionable clothes and are usually restricted in time, materials, and theme. Their designs are judged and one or more designers are eliminated each week. Supermodel Heidi Klum co-developed the program and appears as one of the celebrity judges with the Elle Magazine. So far, Project Runway has versions in the United Kingdom, Norway, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, and now in the Philippines .

Project Runway 'Philippines'

Distributed by the FremantleMedia, Solar Entertainment Corporation and Unitel Productions were able to put up an adaptation of the reality series that would aim to find the "next big Filipino fashion designer" to join the ranks of Monique Lhuillier and Ramon Felix Totengco. After six months of airing teasers, Solar Entertainment formally launched the show last July 10, revealing only the main cast - and keeping mum about what's going to happen inside the sewing room. The winner will receive P500,000 in cash, a start-up business package, an editorial spread in Mega magazine, and an opportunity to show their collection in Philippine Fashion Week

The Cast

For this Philippine version, international model Teresa Herrera is the designated Heidi Klum of the show, while designer Jojie Lloren will be playing the role of style mentor to the designers (style guru Tim Gunn's counterpart). Resident judges include fashion designer Rajo Laurel and model-turned-fashion columnist Apples Aberin-Sadhwani.

The Finalists

Auditions were conducted from January to March of the present year at the SoFA in Makati City and in other key cities of the country such as Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Dumaguete, and General Santos City. The 14 finalists of PRP (Project Runway Philippines), which consists of a mix of established and new designers, were introduced in a press conference held in Greenbelt 5 Gallery in Makati City. The finalists are:

  • Aries Lagat - He's from Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental. He studied under a scholarship program at Slim's Fashion and Art School in Manila. Aries' claim to fame is winning the grand prize at the 2006 Mega Young Designers competition, which awarded him a one-year study grant in Mod'Art Paris.

  • Ava Paguyo - She graduated with a double degree in B.S. Biology and Clothing Technology. She trained under Pinoy Big Brother contender and fashion designer Mich Dulce. Her style profile: a mix of Barbie and Japanese anime.

  • Bo Parcon - Before joining Project Runway, he had already launched his own label in his hometown, Iloilo City. His work have graced runway shows in the city and landed on fashion pages in Manila.

  • Eli Gonzales - While trying to finish a degree in industrial design in college, he decided to heed the call of his true passion and shifted his career to fashion. He vows to create clothes that "people would be happy wearing".

  • Ivan Raborar - A native of Koronadal, South Cotabato, Ivan takes pride of his Mindanaoan roots by mastering the art of T'nalak tailoring. He won the T'nalak Haute Couture grand prize twice and has become a regular favorite of Mindanao fashion community.

  • Jaz Cerezo - She graduated in Far Eastern University (FEU) with a degree in advertising. She later went to Slim's Fashion and Art School to pursue her fashion dreams. Before auditioning for Project Runway, she designed for a local teen girl's apparel and created bridal and evening gowns for clients.

  • Mara Reyes - Despite being petite, and perhaps, being among the youngest in the competition, Mara is the most calm and confident. She banks on her Fine Arts degree and background in costume design to win the competition. During interviews with the press, she even showed some signs of being the "feisty imp" that reality shows always have.

  • Philip Tampus - Before auditioning for Project Runway, Philip has already carved a fashion career in the Middle East, where he is formerly based. He was the head of salons for bridal and evening wears in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. His next move is to dominate the Philippine fashion scene by attempting to win the contest.

  • Veejay Floresca - Veejay joined Project Runway Philippines with credentials rarely achieved by fashion designers of his age. He studied for a year in an art and design school in London, he once joined the International Competition of Young Designers in Paris, and some of his works were already seen in local fashion magazines and catwalks. One glossy has even tagged Veejay's design as "The New Face of Avant Garde."

  • Winnie Chua - Often pensive and demure, Winnie prefers to walk the talk when it comes to her designs. Her extensive background in fashion merchandising afforded her a slot in the top 14 Project Runway hopefuls. She describes her style profile as a combination of commercial appeal and her signature "minimalist-architectural style".

  • Charette Regala - She's a full-time clothing technology instructor in UP Diliman. She also has a background in managing a sports apparel brand before she joined Project Runway Philippines.

  • Lord Maturan - Loud and candid, Lord reminds Project Runway followers of Season 4 contestant Christ March. His gameplan is just to "have fun" in the show. He says he takes his inspiration from culture, religion, and politics.

  • Lorymer Villareal - Lorymer proves that the key to make it big in the fashion world is not formal education, but raw talent. He is a self-trained designer who won the 2005 Philippine Fashion Design Competition, which gave him the opportunity to show his works in Paris at the International Competition of Young Fashion Designers in the same year.

  • Loida Hunter - At 51, Loida is the most senior in the group. She is a home-based dressmaker whose forte is making corporate wear. She tried out for Project Runway because she wanted to explore her creativity in creating wardrobe outside the office.
Eight of the finalists came from Luzon, four from Visayas, and two from Mindanao. Majority of them had formal education in fashion and have established their own fashion businesses before auditioning for the reality show.

The Episodes

And so the runway drama began.

While keeping true to the US series, this Philippine version tries to inject a bit of local flavor and original design challenge concepts in order to differentiate themselves from Project Runway USA.

Episode 1 - After an introductory round of coconut water straight out of coconuts, the designers were tasked to collect as much fabrics and accessories, which were draped on parked jeepneys, as possible. They were then told that they are required to use all of the materials they have gathered in creating a dress that shows their personality as a designer.

Episode 2 - The remaining designers were tasked to create a dress inspired from their assigned legendary Filipino fashion designers. To have an idea on the styles of these "13 Legends," the designers had consultations with students from the School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA). They were given P2,000 for materials from Metro Gaisano Mall in Taguig City and two days to sew their creations.

Episode 3 - Lloren introduced the remaining designers to Carla Sibal (editor-in-chief of Mega magazine) and Sarah Meier (model and former VJ of MTV Asia). The competitors were tasked to create a design that fuses hiphop and haute couture sensibilities. Meier chose six design sketches for the runway show, while the designers of which chose their respective team partners. The winning design will be worn by Meier in a fashion editorial for Mega magazine, while the designer was granted immunity for the next challenge.

Episode 4 - The remaining designers were brought to TRIbeca Private Residence, a resort in Muntinlupa City, for a whole day of rest. What they did not know is that the next challenge would take place there. They were tasked by a representative of Nestle Philippines to create a resort wear that can easily be transformed as a day dress and an evening wear using the color palette of Nesvita Cereal Milk Drink. The designers had to gather their materials in cabanas situated in the resort within the time limit of five minutes. The winning designer will be granted immunity for the next challenge, and the winning design will be worn by the winner of Miss Philippines-Earth 2008.

This is a manifestation of growing fashion-awareness Filipinos are acquiring. The need of having Project Runway's Philppine version shows that Filipnos can influence the world of fashion through our unique culture. PRP will surely click to the fashion addicts. And the ensuing drama in every challenge has kept the Project Runway alive in the past three years, and, for the fans who already marked their calendar for the first Philippine run, there's nothing more frustrating than just counting the days and not knowing what to expect. In the absence of spoilers or insider scoops, it helps to know about the designers who will go through the grueling challenges.

Project Runway Philippines airs every Wednesday at 10 p.m. on ETC Entertainment Central, SBN Channel 21.

Your Rules, Your Style---
When Rules Dictate Your Style
A Closer Look in PUP Fashion
and its New Dress Code Policy

by: Bryan R. Bahena

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines is recognized as one of the most comprehensive state universities in the country-- rendering quality education to the fullest and producing a number of globally competitive individuals-- a total university that is, it has been the springboard and pedestal of many graduates towards the road to success. And though it may have some inadequacies when it comes to state-of-the-art facilities, it compensates through incomparable teaching strategies rendered by professors who share invaluable pieces of knowledge on their respective fields of expertise. Moreover, it provides a sound learning atmosphere that enables students maximize their indidividual potentialities.

Tagged as the university where freedom is exercised fully, it is just but undeniable that academic freedom is omnipresent in the premises of the university per se-- all aspects are guided by the doctrine of academic freedom-- students enjoy such pertinent benefits and rights including the concept of CHOICE.

From that point of view, let us delve on the deeper perspective of fashion statements prevalent in the university as far as the freedom of choice of the so-called and ever-phenomenal "iskolar ng bayan" is concerned.

The moment you walk on Teresa St., especially during morning (around 7:00-8:00) you'd see a bunch of students rushing to their first period classes-- walking very fast, carrying pile of books with bags either carried on the shoulder or at the back... some doesn't carry such while others have more than two (sounds nerdy, doesn't it?!). One time, I decided to come to school early to take a closer look on how my fellow PUPians gear and dress up for school. I stood in front of a bookstore which was around 4 alleys away from the main road. I watched closely as my fellow iskolar ng bayan walk towards the main gate. Unconsciously, I began smiling. During those moments (with my twittering imagination), I thought Teresa St. was a vast, flambouyant runway of an extravagant, star-studded fashion show-- similar to that of New York and Los Angeles fashion weeks. What confronted me was like a scenario where several models from all walks of life-- male, female, gays, bisexuals, lesbians, the rich, the marginalized (everyone was well-represented)-- strutted their fierce fashion statements. Moreover, it was a feast of diverse, differentiated designs of shirts, skirts, pants, apparel

It was such a heterogeneous mixture of fashion statements-- nonetheless, the common denominator was the "rugged" statement-- shirt on the top paired with the iconic maong pants and colorful sneakers or flip flops. I stood a little longer and watched a little closer. I started to smile more and more as I stared on my fellow PUPians. It was just but a surprise that although there was a common of denominator of ruggedness among them, still there was a difference that boiled down to choice-- color, design, prints, style and the alike-- on how the dresses were carried. There were some whose dresses fit them perfectly and emphasized their endowments while some had issues on symmetry-- a few had dresses that did not flatter their wonderful bodies.

I decided to walk along and enter the main campus. I was about to enter the gate. yet, on my surprise, I thought there was an ongoing commotion-- some students were not allowed to enter. I was puzzled and clueless if there was a problem. What was more surprising then was on that the same day, the new policy when it comes to "dress code" was implemented by the administration-- no spaghetti straps, no sleeveless, no micro-mini skirts, no flip flops and open shoes-- many things have been prohibited to be worn once you enter the University premises. On top of that, those colleges and departments that require uniforms would be strict in the implementation of their respective uniforms.

I thought, "Is this the start of an oppressive administration that plans to suppress the academic freedom of students?". I tried being optimistic and I told myself that maybe it was just one of the administration's strategic measures to make PUP a more globally competitive academic institution.

But as I walk towards the library (I had a tough assignment for my afternoon class and I had to consult the antique books...), I had some serious thoughts going on in my mind. Personally, I thought the policy was balderdash. It would just stir up the radicalism residing in the hearts and souls of the activist student movements. I mean, would there be any logical explanation that would justify the intertwinement between the way you dress and the way you are going to acquire knowledge? CERTAINLY NONE. Bottom line?!?! STUDY HABITS-- it's all there and not on the way you dress. Your performance inside the classroom would, in anyway, not be affected by the way you dress. The point is, for as long as you are comfortable with what you wear, go ahead! I do believe that after all, the Philippines emanates democracy... (nobody has the right to tell you what you are supposed to wear...).

Yet, on the other side of the story, I supposed that the administration was just concerned on how PUPians carry themselves as students especially on the way they dress. I just thought that all it wanted was for the students to become presentable, as far as their total personality was concerned. Going back, maybe it just wanted the best for the students as far as the university, being a globally competitive one, was concerned.

I pondered on these ideas as I browsed on my research materials. I weighed on both sides and I had a hard time dealing with the timely issue of that day. Yet, after all, I had a just judgment on my thoughts-- Dress the way you want but be sure it's within the context of what is ethical and moral from what is otherwise not... Remember, you are a student and you must dress like one. Many eyes are staring at you and are throwing judgments on the way you carry yourself-- keep in mind the societal norms which are juxtaposed to every individual of this intricate world. Yah! I mean, I thought I was like Plato and Aristotle during those times-- after all, I've always had a sound, rational mind in understanding issues.

I was about to finish my research when I thought that maybe, the issue of the new dress code policy of the university would still be a taboo-- especially to those who value academic freedom so much-- it would necessitate a little more time for explanations and justifications. Funny though, I also thought that once I get out of the library, I would hear student rallies condemning the said policy.

I was heading towards the exit when suddenly I heard loud noises from the fourth floor. Well, guess what?! Just as I thought... "Bagong Dress Code Policy, Ibasura!!!"

Uniform REFORM

Serious News , Funny Views on Having a College Uniform

Ruelito B. Aristo

And the One Million Peso Question that will save the earth from global warming is : How to come up with a comfy and trendy College Uniform that will suit the taste buds of the ever fashionable PUP College of Communication students?

Closet Kings and Queens. As we enter the questionable stampede-prone entrance of the PUP College of Communication , the first thing that you will notice is the way students dress-up their selves. Wearing pastel-color tops ( R-O-Y-G- B-I-V = M-T-W-TH-F) , checkered and skinny bottoms ( the ultimate super extra fitted jeans to the fullest ) , shinning shimmering shoes and bags ( the shiner , the better ) , bouncing bling-blings ( Christmas tree in the making ) , and made in Beijing gadgets ( 1 hour guarantee ). It’s the culture of the environment to dress-up your self as if everyday is your birthday or today is gonna be your last day.

Now the spotlight is ready : ( buksan ang ilaw , music , pasarapin ang eksena – ilabas ang coke ) the next thing to prepare for is to ramp at the catwalk: the COC lobby. It’s a matter of attitude on how you carry your self , because its not that easy to walk at the center of the earth with all those eyes staring ; as you walk to the lobby. As if you’re a hanger in their eyes or a walking manikins – looking only on the clothes you are wearing.

Here you can find different students in their different fashion SSS ( senses , styles , statements ).

Ghetto’s and Hip hop’s ( frustrated rappers in super extra large shirt with silver plated bling-blings. yo men! )

Walking gift wrappers ( kikay’s in rainbow color dress with their color coordinated shoes and bags with matching ribbon hair bands )

Emo’s ( the emotional immortals – those wearing black from head to toe including nail polish , as if everyday is all saint’s day. Don’t forget the eye liner to complete the attitude! )

The Stars of Bethlehem ( standout trend setters – they are Tessa Prieto Valdez in the making , wearing everything they can wear. The more striking , the better )

D Another’s ( Still in their cocoon completing their metamorphosis cycle. They are still in deciding stage of their life , for the mean time , they will wear white shirt for them not to be out of place )

PolGov 301 ( So Far with the Introduction )

On June 23,2008 a revolutionary congress of COC class presidents met in COC AVR headed by Mr.’ Jordan Ga – Student Council President , authorized the COC Legislature to call for a constitutional convention to draft the controversial COC uniform under R.A. No. 9189.

Article I of the 'COC Constitution'

Section I. The College of Communication comprises the Department of Broadcast Communication , Department of Journalism , Department of Communication Research , with all the regular students embrace therein , and all other irregular students over which the college has sovereignty or jurisdiction , consisting of ghetto’s , hip hop’s and emo students , including walking gift wrappers , stars of Bethlehem and d another’s. The students around , between , walking and chatting along the COC lobby , regardless of their fashion statements should wear the controversial COC uniform starting this September of this school year to be recognize as part of the internal community of the College of Communication.

The Article I Section I of the COC Constitution undergoes several amendments. On the COC Assembly conducted last June 27, 2008 at the Bulwagang Balagtas , the faculty announced that the Freshmen and Sophomore students only are required to wear the college uniform as a result of the total votes canvassed which took effect early this semester.

Ø All the students were given a privilege to vote to their desired uniform designs.

Ø The top 3 designs being chosen were also came from the students of PUP COC.

Ø The new COC uniform was designed by a third year journalism student ( not to mention his name for comments , suggestion and security purposes )

Ø The prime reason of having a College Uniform is for security purposes of the student of PUP COC.

Mathematical Formula

Under garments + Polo/Blouse + Vest = 3 layer College Uniform

+ Necktie + Sweat + Itchiness + ROOM 203 = Good luck guys !

Distinction Between Fashion , College Uniform and Peach-Twill Cloth

Fashion is the art of dressing up in your College Uniform through the use of synthetic material called Pitch-Twill Cloth.
